[2024·惠州二調(diào)]Failing in something isn't a really nice feeling, but Scotland's Fettes College in Edinburgh wants to show its students that failure isn't something to fear and is actually something to accept willingly!

The boarding school held “failure week” to celebrateW1 taking risks and learning from them. Whether in sports or school, children often face lots of pressure to succeed and do well, and the school was becoming concerned.

“Young people from all walks of life live in a high-pressure environment where they are trying very hard to achieve a level of perfection,” said Sue Bruce, head of personal and social education in the school.

“This week at Fettes we have been focusing onP1 one of the most misunderstoodW2 parts of success: failure. While we are often scared of failure, it is important to learn that it is only through failing, often many times, that we learn how to succeed.S All through the week, we have looked at the experiences of some of the most successful inventors, artists and businessmen, who failed hundreds, if not thousands of times on their journey to success,” read a letter on Fettes College's website.

To celebrate failure, students were encouraged to try something they've never done before, like playing an instrumentW3 or dancing in front of audiences. A number of students stepped up and tried things that they finally failed in, but they had fun and enjoyed the experience. “The concert was extremely enjoyableW4, proving that we should always try not to worry about failure and have a go!” read another note on the website. Students were also taught about famous people like J.K.Rowling and Richard Branson who failed many times before they finished what they set outP2 to do.

“If they let the fear of failure stop them from doing something, they are actually stopping themselves from learning, developing, and potentiallyW5 succeeding,”said Bruce.

[2024·河南開(kāi)封摸底考試]A terrible competitionW1 is going on in England, with billions of dollars and hundreds of lives at risk. OK, that's not true. But competitors from around the world gathered on Thursday for the annual competition to compete for the world's biggest person who tells lies.

Each participant is given up to five minutes to make up the best fib in the contest, which was foundedW2 in honor ofP1 19th-century Bridge Inn landlord Will Ritson, who was reportedly famous for his lies. Competitors gather at the Bridge Inn every year for the competition, a small pub in northwestern England. Anyone but lawyers and politicians can take part inP2 the competition.

A study found that nearly all lies are detectable (可檢測(cè)的) through visibleW3 facial muscle reactions in the person telling a lie. “Thus, while interpersonal cheat often is highly successful, signs of hidden emotionalW4 states are communicated clearly to the informed observer,” the study concludedW5.

A churchman of Carlisle reportedly holds what may be the greatest lie of all time in the competition, simply stating, “I have never told a lie in my life.”

In 2003, Abrie Krueger from South Africa became the first one to win the competition.S In 2006, comedian Sue Perkins became the first female to win the competition, telling a tale about people riding camels to work as a result of climate change.

[2024·江津中學(xué)階段檢測(cè)]Have you heard about Leap year? Leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365. It normally occurs every four years, always on an even-numbered year. The extra day is added to our shortest month. That is the second month of the year, which in non-leap years has 28 days, two fewer than any other month.

          1

We also call Leap year the bissextile year (閏年).

          2

In our calendar system there is a need for a leap year because the solar year (the time it takes the earth to go around the sun once)is actually slightly more than 365 days long. That extra day—Feb.29 every four years—helps correct the difference between our calendar and the solar calendar.

It is said that Leap year was first made part of the calendar by the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar. His astronomers had calculated the length of the solar year to be 365 days and six hours. So Caesar declared that an extra day be added to the calendar.

          3

However, Caesar's adjustment was not completely accurate because his astronomers' year exceeded the true solar year by eleven minutes and fourteen seconds. By 1582, a difference of ten days had developed between the calendar year and the true solar year. To correct this error, Pope Gregory XⅢ ruled that every fourth year would continue to be a leap year except for century years that could not be divided evenly by 400. By this system, century years such as 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but the year 2000 was a leap year.

          4

People born on Feb.29 celebrate their growing up a little differently from the rest of us.

          5

But if they go strictly by the calendar, they have only one-fourth as many birthday celebrations as most people.

A.They acknowledge that they get older each year.

B.When you see Feb.29 on a calendar, you know that year is a leap year.

C.This is its formal, or scientific title.

D.This may seem complicated, but it works.

E.In a leap year, the extra day is added to the second month, giving it 29 instead of the usual 28 days.

F.The leap year was introduced in the Julian calendar in 46 BC.

G.This is done every four years.

3.G 第三段講的是Leap year的由來(lái),結(jié)合上句“So Caesar declared that an extra day be added to the calendar.”可知答案。

          4.D 該段講述的是Leap year的時(shí)間計(jì)算中存在的一些問(wèn)題以及調(diào)整的情況,根據(jù)上文講述的內(nèi)容,該空進(jìn)行總結(jié)。

5.A 根據(jù)上句中“people born on Feb.29 celebrate their growing up a little differently from the rest of us.”
